The government takes a firm stance on electric scooters

The minimum age is raised from 12 to 14 years and fines are increased to 135 euros starting today for scooter users.

Accidents related to the use of electric scooters in the city have increased in recent years, prompting the government to announce in March a national action plan to better regulate the circulation of these devices.

Starting this Friday, September 1st, you must be at least 14 years old to ride an electric scooter on public roads. Additionally, fines increase from 35 to 135 euros to penalize riding with two people on a single device, which is strictly forbidden, to remind everyone.

The latest measure that will please everyone—drivers, motorcyclists, and pedestrians—is the enforcement of a single 135-euro fine for any circulation in prohibited areas. This includes riding against traffic or in pedestrian zones, including sidewalks. Yes, a user of roller skates, skateboard, or non-motorized scooter is considered a pedestrian and must ride on the sidewalk. However, riding an electric scooter on a sidewalk is forbidden! The speed limit remains at 25 km/h, and the same penalties apply in case of speeding violations.

Finally, the charter regarding the conditions of sale, transfer, rental, and use of these devices has been modified. All sales of new vehicles must be declared, and an identification number will be engraved on the scooter. What about scooters exchanged between individuals? There is not much detail, to be honest… The second-hand market is expected to experience a busy and interesting period.

The timing of this decree’s implementation, on the same day Paris is freed from free-floating scooters, sends a strong signal and is certainly not entirely coincidental. Let’s hope these common-sense measures bring some peace after the chaos of recent years.
