Will fuel be cheaper on December 1st?

This is the promise made this weekend by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire.

The government seems determined to lift the ban on loss-leading fuel sales, a legal provision dating back to 1963, in order to mechanically cause a decrease in pump prices. The announcement was made on Sunday by Elisabeth Borne herself in an interview with our colleagues at the Le Parisien. As announced for several weeks, it will be up to large groups and distributors to make an effort to support the purchasing power of the French.

Economy Minister, Bruno Le Maire, confirmed the information this morning, specifying that the measure allowing distributors to sell at a loss will be effective from the beginning of December, once the legislative text has been studied and validated by the assemblies in October. It is expected to be applied, according to the minister, for 6 months.

This summer, fuel prices rose again, approaching the symbolic threshold of two euros on average across France, for both petrol and diesel.

In theory, we can only applaud any measure aimed at curbing this increase following the surge in oil prices, but what impact on the bill? Cautious, the minister did not want to commit to a figure that he is not certain of achieving, to paraphrase his words.
