Gazelle, the CGT’s Electric Car
This page is translated from the original post "Gazelle, la voiture électrique de la CGT" in French.

The project might look like a bad joke, even a hoax, if it weren’t for Sophie Binet, the union’s general secretary.
On Friday, October 20, 2023, the CGT MMT-B union at the Mutares factory in Blanquefort presented the industrial project “Gazelle”, an affordable electric car, in the presence of Sophie Binet, CGT general secretary.
Specializing in gearbox manufacturing, the MMT-B factory in Blanquefort faces an uncertain future due to a sharp decline in orders expected from March 2024. While diversification projects are being studied by the company, Wattpark (production of electric charging stations) and Vitirover (robotic lawn mower), they will not be enough alone to address the upcoming issues of under-activity.
The solution could come from a project for a small electric vehicle produced locally by Gazelle Tech. On the dedicated website for this project, it is stated that it is a peri-urban vehicle entirely made of composite materials. Based on the observation that 75% of a vehicle’s energy consumption is related to its weight, Gazelle has patented the Aerocell, an auto-supporting body shell made of composite materials that allows for drastically reducing the vehicle’s weight while maintaining comfort and safety. This lightness promises the use of twice fewer batteries than its competitors. It’s ambitious, but unfortunately no concrete figures are available yet to form an opinion.
The Gazelle Tech project is contingent upon raising about ten million euros in the coming months, as well as vehicle homologation, as explained to AFP by its founder, Gaël Lavaud. We will wait a bit longer to form an opinion on this initiative supported by the CGT. It at least has the merit of going in the direction of a new responsible mobility, without the narrow-minded bias of a union.
