Tesla Time Machine

It’s not necessarily the model we expected for a Doc Brown DeLorean cosplay, but the result is fiery!

If Tesla writes its history on the roads, the DeLorean made its mark thanks to the Back to the Future trilogy. The film inspired many references to the movie’s car, and most of us have come across one at a car show. Recently, a workshop in Florida took a different path by building a tribute to Doc Brown’s time machine based on a… Tesla Model X. To push the mimicry further, the cheerful beast leaves streaks of flames on the road!

This futuristic machine is the work of Robert Selby and The Shop, an auto workshop based in Bradenton, Florida. He has been sharing his builds on Instagram for quite some time now to showcase his team’s craftsmanship, and what a great way to do so! He thought that after some internal combustion engine builds, it was time to go electric. “Most electric vehicle owners consider them household appliances,” he says. “I decided to buy an electric vehicle and turn it into something really stupid just for fun.” Let us tell you how much we think of such an approach after being so disappointed with the Ferrari Testarossa from Gas Monkey Garage.

Instead of a DeLorean DMC-12, you find a Tesla Model X Plaid, chosen for its butterfly rear doors that mimic the DeLorean’s functions. From there, it was just a matter of equipping the electric SUV with the characteristics of Doc Brown’s legendary time machine. The modifications include a silver wrap, an 80s-style grille on the rear lights, and various tubes and wires tangled along the body, as well as the flux capacitor inside. Here is the TMC-12X, with a T for Tesla replacing the D of DeLorean and an X for… Model X.

But the coolest feature of this car is the twin flamethrowers built into the rear bumper. They shoot a trail of flames behind the vehicle, simulating the scorched tire tracks left by the DeLorean when traveling through time.

Selby enjoys that his creation is equally loved or despised. At least he notes that it does not leave anyone indifferent! It’s spectacular, not taken seriously, and above all, it serves no purpose other than to have fun and make people smile. That’s why we love this quirky Time Machine so much!
