You will never see this Volvo in France

Volvo EM90

Sometimes it’s reasonable to leave a small escape hatch with a “unless,” but for this Volvo, we’re certain of ourselves!

The acquisition of Volvo by the Chinese Group Geely has been more than highly profitable. Primarily thanks to the good sales figures of the brand, which maintains its aura of quality and safety. All of this is true and well-deserved. Then, Geely didn’t hesitate to take some models from Volvo’s production lines to equip its other brands, such as the Volvo XC40 becoming Lynk & Co 01.

It would therefore have been logical for Volvo to benefit from a little boost from the Chinese as well. Well, we will have to wait a little longer!

After using its technology, Geely is now using the name and image of Volvo. The Chinese group has started mass production of Volvo’s first minivan, the EM90 which we presented to you a few weeks ago. Since then, we have received more information, and it turns out that it is actually a rebadged Zeekr 009 launched earlier this year, which has been a significant commercial flop. It must be said that the market for this niche is not huge for a brand like Zeekr, which has a rather premium and sporty image. And incidentally, it’s not very attractive. Volvo, on the other hand, embodies elegance and the charm of European luxury, justifying a rather spicy price of 818,000 yuan, or about 115,000 euros. However, if it arrives in Europe, it will only be a shabby Chinese duck disguised as a white goose. Not easy…

The dimensions of the EM90 are 5206 / 2024 / 1859 mm with a wheelbase of 3205 mm. It features six seats arranged in three rows and 21 Bowers & Wilkins speakers. The powertrain includes a 200 kW electric motor on the rear axle, powered by a 116 kWh battery for over 700 km of range.

The only small issue is that the Zeekr 009 is offered at 500,000 Yuan (€71,000) with four-wheel drive and 400 kW! The finish is somewhat inferior, but nothing that justifies such a price difference. Honestly, Geely is sparing no effort for Volvo!
