The New Kia K4 in Photos

Kia K4

Currently limited to the American market, this Kia with a disruptive look could have a strong role to play in Europe.

One thing is certain, this Kia K4 could not keep its name in France! But why not succeed the Ceed? The bodywork is decidedly futuristic, blending straight lines and abrupt breaks. At Kia, they call this “Opposites united,” or “the united opposites.” It perfectly defines this bold and radical approach. According to the brand’s own words, this style is built from logically aligned squares in an apparently illogical way. A disruptive approach that will inevitably unsettle the most conservative automotive clientele, but one that deserves credit for bringing a welcome breath of fresh air.

The lighting signature contributes greatly to the dynamic effect of the overall look, with vertical headlights pushed to the edges of the grille, helping to create a broad and solid stance, while the daytime running lights integrate into horizontal chrome bands. The same philosophy follows at the rear with vertical taillights positioned at the ends of the vehicle, running downward into a wide, intricately styled bumper which incorporates the diffuser. A sharp break in the rear window creates a Fastback look, and while the effect is successful, to be honest, we are not entirely convinced. It may need to be softened a bit before going into production. At least Kia’s designers have certainly not been idle!

A slight disappointment is in the cockpit, where it is claimed that the design breaks away from the “driver-centric” norm by dividing the dashboard into two zones: a highly technical driver’s area and a comfortable passenger zone. However, traditionalism prevails with a large digital screen for the driver and absolutely nothing for the passenger! It’s certainly comfortable, but if you’ve ever ridden in a latest-generation Porsche with passenger displays, you’ll feel somewhat punished in this Kia! No need to mention the massive RND control with its large unlocking button, and the Warning in the middle of the console that takes us back to the 1980s. Could the real innovation perhaps lie in the contrast between an ultra-modern exterior and a very classic interior?

Two internal combustion engine options are available at launch: a 2.0-liter petrol engine with 147 horsepower and a more powerful 1.6-liter turbo with 190 hp. The arrival of hybrid, and possibly electric, versions will give us clues about the future of this model outside the American continent.
