Porsche 911 hybride

The new Carrera GTS is the first Porsche 911 approved for road use equipped with a hybrid powertrain.

You might have guessed it; what you’re looking at isn’t a plug-in hybrid Porsche capable of covering dozens of kilometers in 100% electric mode. Although sporty at heart, the 911 is a venerable lady that shouldn’t be hurried. So it’s best to proceed gently and sparingly, since the main thing for Porsche is now to be able to boast having modernized four of its six models in just a few months: Panamera, Taycan, Macan, and 911.

Double Hybridization

While the heart of the beast remains a fantastic 3.6-liter Flat 6 with 485 hp, it receives a two-part T-Hybrid system. This initially consists of an integrated electric motor placed between the compressor and the turbine wheel. Its role isn’t primarily to drive the car but rather to instantly level the turbocharger, creating immediate optimal boost pressure. This electric motor also functions as a generator, producing up to 11 kW (15 hp) of electrical power harvested from the exhaust gases. The turbocharger can then transition from a bypass valve, allowing Porsche to use a single turbo instead of the usual two.

The powertrain also includes a permanent magnet synchronous motor integrated into the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK). It can deliver 150 Nm of torque and 55 hp (40 kW). Porsche connected these two electric motors to a lightweight, compact high-voltage battery. Similar in size to a standard 12V battery, it can store up to 1.9 kWh at 400 V. This results in more power and especially more responsiveness, with a relatively modest weight increase of 50 kg to maintain the soul of the 911. With a total of 541 hp, 610 Nm of torque, a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.0 seconds, and a top speed of 312 km/h, the goals are met.

A Specific Body

Without revolutionizing the design of the 911, Porsche has equipped this hybrid model with targeted updates focusing on aerodynamics. Changes include new model-specific bumpers and the integration of all lighting functions into four-point LED matrix headlights. This allows the omission of the front high beams and creates space for larger cooling vents at the front of the car.

On the 911 Carrera GTS, the front features five active cooling flaps arranged vertically and one hidden flap on each side. Coupled with an active diffuser, they direct airflow as needed. When power demand is low, the shutters close to optimize aerodynamics; when higher power is required, they feed the radiators.

As a modern car, for the first time, the instrument cluster is entirely digital. The 12.6-inch curved screen elegantly integrates into the dashboard and can be extensively customized. It offers up to seven views, including an exclusive Classic display inspired by traditional Porsche dial design with a central tachometer. This is what it takes to feel truly in a real 911!
