Initially, AAA DATA recorded 141,298 new passenger vehicle registrations (VPN) for the month of May, which is a slightly lower number than in May 2023. For reference, 145,536 units were sold in May 2023, an increase of 15% compared to May 2022. We are therefore seeing a slightly declining market, but there is no significant contraction in sales. The upward trend is even more pronounced for hybrid drivetrains, which are currently very popular. They recorded a 22% increase in registrations and now capture 41% of the VPN market, 9 points more than in May 2023. These figures are somewhat misleading, unfortunately, as mild hybrids (MHEV) have surged by 41% and represent 16% of the market. We continue to believe that calling these cars hybrids is debatable, as in their case, electric assistance is more about comfort or performance than a truly separate technology. On their part, plug-in hybrids (PHEV) have seen a 19% decrease, holding 7% of the market.
Electrified cars continue to take an increasingly significant place on our roads, and 100% electric vehicles are not lagging behind. Can we therefore assert that there is no sales crisis? Taking the case of BEVs alone, supply continues to grow, especially with the arrival of new Chinese players, and the market is not progressing quickly enough to absorb this influx. In conclusion, electric vehicles are selling more, but not enough to clear all of the production.
