A Smart for adventurers? We’ve seen it all…
It’s hard to understand Smart’s new positioning, but there is at least one thing we are sure of: the small urban car is over!
The brand new Smart #5 is Smart’s first foray into the crowded market of mid-size premium SUVs. A bold and somewhat crazy challenge that Smart believes it can meet by stepping out of its historical urban boundaries to venture into a new world of outdoor adventures. Leaving one’s comfort zone is great and enriching, but one must be well-prepared. While waiting for the world premiere of the #5 on August 28 in Australia, Smart unveils its “Adventurers Collection,” a version of the car designed for an intelligent outdoor experience. For us, a Smart is an urban vehicle, but why not.

Faithfully to the concept car previewing this new SUV, a modular roof rack is offered. Its removable double-layer X structure provides space to accommodate equipment. Flexible, it will be designed to receive new accessories still in development by the manufacturer, such as a bike rack or tent.
A city Smart disguised for the fields
Several elements from the Concept #5 are also present, such as side steps intended to improve accessibility, although they are likely more for looks since their utility is minimal for a vehicle with low ground clearance. The side pouch mounted at the top of the rear left of the vehicle is more useful for placing essential items like a folding tent or mosquito spray. Finally, there’s an extendable side ladder to access the roof and roof rack. We still await confirmation of the vehicle’s load capacity and whether the suspension will appreciate the treatment. In the worst-case scenario, we can always store vegetables in the pouch and water packs on the roof when we go shopping…

In the end, we would like to be convinced of Smart’s good intentions and ambition to develop a robust SUV, but the brand’s image doesn’t quite align with this project. Let’s give it a chance, but if the outcome is disappointing, beware of backlash.
