Subaru is liquidating its electric SUV with a €11,390 discount!
Like the Toyota bZ4X, or to simplify, a carbon copy, the Subaru Solterra has never managed to find its audience.
Hard to distinguish the Toyota bZ4X and the Subaru Solterra, and for good reason. Like the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ coupes, these two compact electric SUVs share the same technical base due to a collaboration between the two Japanese manufacturers. That’s why they have identical chassis and a very similar cabin, in addition to powertrains where the power and battery size do not differ between models. An exchange of good practices between Japanese pals? Toyota owning 20% of Subaru’s capital makes the power dynamic not entirely equal, as evidenced by the sales figures heavily favoring Toyota compared to its cousin Subaru. And the Toyota is selling very poorly…
Yet the car has no shame in its technical specifications, and Subaru assures us that the Solterra aims to stay true to the brand’s values. While the electric model does not aspire to be as sporty as the Impreza that shone in rallies with Colin McRae, it shares some common points. The manufacturer gained its reputation through its all-wheel-drive models, a technology modernized with one electric motor powering the front wheels and another driving the rear wheels. The maximum combined power reaches 160 kW while the battery has a capacity of 71.4 kWh. Subaru claims a credible range of 465 km, reinforced by Toyota’s generally very honest endorsement on the subject.
Subaru had no choice anymore
As a cherry on top, the Subaru Solterra earned 5 stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests, so why isn’t it selling? Obviously because of its pricing. With a completely outrageous starting price of 59,990 euros, it had lead weights in its wings even before trying to take off. So just like Toyota has done for the bZ4X, Subaru is slashing prices on their stock units with a monstrous discount of 11,000 euros before negotiation. We don’t even know how low we can bring the price… At 48,600 euros, it remains very expensive, but at least it has a chance to convince the few undecided who might have cracked for it.
