Volvo sells 300 electric trucks to a single customer

This is a mega-order of electric trucks that Volvo Trucks has received from the Dutch carrier DSV.

This is a strong message in terms of decarbonization of the freight transport sector that DSV has just sent. By ordering 300 electric tractors at once from Volvo Trucks, and placing an option for 2,000 more trucks by 2030, we are witnessing a profound technological shift.

In reality, this remains a small step considering that DSV’s fleet, one of the world leaders in logistics, consists of 20,000 trucks! In the long term, this means that 10% of the fleet will be electric, but it is already a major revolution. DSV, the main carrier for the Volvo group, is already using electric trucks Volvo in Sweden and Denmark, and has set up charging infrastructures powered by solar energy in its distribution centers in these two countries.

Millions of euros invested

In parallel with this electric order, DSV has signed an agreement for the acquisition of 500 low-consumption Volvo trucks running on diesel and liquefied natural gas (LNG). All these units will be delivered between 2024 and 2026.

Neither Volvo Trucks nor DSV disclose the value of this transaction, but with a unit price of about 350,000 euros, we can estimate the figure to be around 105 million euros. As for the thermal trucks, which are indeed cheaper (about 130,000 euros excluding tax), an additional 65 million euros would thus need to be added.

Since 2019, Volvo has delivered more than 3,800 electric trucks in 46 countries. The company now offers the widest range of electric trucks, with eight models meeting various needs, such as urban distribution, waste management, regional transport, and construction. To date, Volvo electric trucks have traveled more than 90 million kilometers, equivalent to 2,200 laps around the world.
