Little by little, BYD has been weaving its web in Europe for two years with patience, pragmatism, and intelligence. But beware of the calm waters.

The BYD Seal 06 GT presented this weekend on the manufacturer’s social media is a new 100% electric compact sedan based on the latest e-Platform 3.0 Evo. We were expecting an Ocean; it will ultimately be the Seal 06 GT. This is surely a way to avoid any comparisons with the Fisker Ocean and its troubles. The car will be officially showcased this weekend at the Chengdu Auto Show in Sichuan, but to prevent any leaks and control the communication around the launch, BYD preferred to share a few photos and scatter some small pieces of information.

The Seal 06 GT takes cues from the Ocean-M concept that made waves in April 2024 at the Beijing auto show. What better than a sporty version to whet the appetite, yet it is always a very risky bet. Once the sporty appendages and accessories are removed, the final rendering can seem bland compared to the generated expectations. But not in this case, as the lines are very balanced and the stance dynamic. We even note some sporty touches with ventilated bumpers and a nice little diffuser. The overall design is a bit less elegant than the Megane, but much less polarizing than the MG4 it also faces. One might criticize a slight lack of modernity and audacity, but the classic design ages well.

As usual with BYD, the car will be sold just a few weeks after its presentation at a Chinese price close to 20,000 euros. It’s still too early to know if this car will have a future in Europe, but the opposite would be quite surprising given that it checks all the boxes. Similarly, does the sporty version have a chance of going into production? One certainty is that the treatment of the interior and the equipment is not disappointing… far from it!
