To address the public deficit, the government is considering increasing taxes on airline tickets

The new government is short on ideas and is set to propose taxing airline tickets both on departure and arrival in France. Or rather, increasing an existing tax. The solidarity tax on airline tickets, commonly known as the TSBA, was established in France in 2006. Referred to as the “Chirac tax,” its goal is to fund UNITAID, an international organization dedicated to improving access to treatments for serious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis in developing countries.

Currently, the revenue from this tax amounts to 460 million euros per year. The government wants to increase this amount to reach 1.5 billion. To achieve this, the income collected from the tax will need to triple, which means that the prices of airline tickets are expected to rise.

Airline tickets up to 50 euros more expensive in economy class

In detail, according to the newspaper Les Echos, the TSBA is expected to see changes in the new versions of the project. For long-haul flights in business class, the tax would increase from 63.07 euros to 100 euros for distances ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 km, and to 200 euros for journeys exceeding 5,000 km. In economy class, it would rise from 7.51 euros to 42 euros for a trip of 1,000 to 5,000 km, and to 60 euros for flights over 5,000 km.

However, the considerations have been limited since some factors have not been taken into account, such as the fact that travelers may want to avoid transiting through Paris, leading to a decrease in ticket sales for departures and arrivals in France. Moreover, the tax is high for a Paris-Beijing flight but nearly nonexistent if the passenger decides to make a stopover in Frankfurt, for example. In any case, if you plan to travel in 2025, it’s advisable to book your tickets quickly as the new budget will take effect from the beginning of next year.
