Retro 2024 – ZS, the Super Hybrid SUV at €22,990 from MG

MG has decided to focus entirely on hybrids in 2025, led by its new compact urban SUV with nearly 200 hp.

You guessed it, the new ZS is only available as a hybrid. It’s slightly larger, measuring 4.43m in length (+11 cm) and 1.82m in width (+1 cm), but maintains a dynamic line thanks to a slightly reduced height. It’s not a showcase of modernity with a very classic, even somewhat dull exterior and interior style, but at least it won’t shock any customers. The interior space is increased with a 3 cm longer wheelbase at 2.61 m, and especially with very modest interior choices. The ZS doesn’t exude fun inside, but everything is well in place without any frivolous details or embellishments.

Let it be known, this new MG ZS is not just a mere electrified thermal, but a true and good hybrid. It features the Hybrid+ powertrain chain, non-rechargeable, introduced by the MG3. Usually, when we talk about non-rechargeable hybrids, unfortunately, the electrification often only serves to reduce CO2 emissions. Occasionally, it can provide a small boost in acceleration, but real hybrids that can be used both electrically and with combustion are rare. There’s no worry here with this ZS, which has clearly chosen to favor electric propulsion, and that’s a good thing!

Its Hybrid+ powertrain consists of a 1.5-liter petrol engine of 75 kW and a 100 kW electric motor paired with a 1.83 kWh battery. This architecture even disrupts the balance between the two power sources, which previously favored the thermal engine. Beyond high efficiency, this electrification technology delivers excellent performance. In the end, a generous power of 195 hp is available to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds, and it offers lively re-acceleration as well, with the 80-120 km/h range covered in just 7.2 seconds.

From the first trim level “Standard,” the new MG ZS Hybrid+ is well equipped with a 7-inch driver display, a 10.25-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, rear parking sensors with backup camera, automatic headlight activation, and keyless start. Features typically found on models costing well over 22,990 euros, are included at the base price. With emissions of 115 g of CO2 per km and a “light” weight of 1,380 kg, it even manages to avoid any 2025 model year penalty!

But the most interesting offer is undoubtedly Long-Term Rental (LTD) for 37 months and 30,000 km on a new MG ZS Hybrid+ Standard, excluding options. With 36 monthly payments of 189 euros after an initial payment of 3,500 euros, you are paying just about 45% of the vehicle’s value to enjoy it hassle-free for three years. This might seem high, but for a latest-generation vehicle that’s highly equipped, it’s not a gift… but it really makes you want to have it.
