At Lucid, friends come first… for lack of better options

Lucid Gravity

Lucid has kept its promise to deliver the first units of its SUV Gravity before the end of the year. But in a rather unusual way!

The first Lucid Gravity vehicles, freshly off the assembly lines in Arizona, have been delivered… but only to friends and company employees! These pre-production models, far from being intended for the general public, will be used for testing and demonstration purposes.

Starting at $94,900 for the Grand Touring version, the Gravity targets the high-end segment, while the more affordable Touring version at $79,900 will not hit the road until late 2025. A rather cautious strategy that seems driven more by prudence than ambition. It must be said that Lucid’s outlook is, to say the least, uncertain.

Peter Rawlinson, CEO of Lucid, emphasized a gradual ramp-up to ensure quality. However, this approach raises questions. After a disappointing 2024 marked by sluggish sales of the Air sedan, this limited launch seems more like a symbolic gesture than a true commercial push.

While the Gravity does fulfill its promise of an “end of year” launch, as announced when pricing was revealed in autumn, it is a victory with very limited scope. Far from reassuring, this operation shows that mass production remains uncertain. Sometimes, in trying to do well, you end up tripping over your own feet. At nearly $95,000, the Gravity competes with much more glamorous and reassuring models like the Cadillac Lyriq, Rivian R1S, and of course Tesla Model X!

Despite some adjustments to the Air sedan, including a price reduction and minor improvements, Lucid’s future remains unclear. Promises of expansion in 2025 could be seen as a risky gamble. While the Gravity embodies hope for a turnaround, initial signs suggest that Lucid is struggling to survive in an increasingly ruthless market.
