Norway Really Is a Nation Like No Other!

Norway’s 100% electric gamble is on the verge of winning. Nine out of ten new passenger cars sold in 2024 were electric.
We know Norway and the Scandinavian countries in general have a strong affinity for electric vehicles, but to completely abandon combustion engines! According to statistics published Thursday by the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV), electric vehicles accounted for 88.9% of new car sales, a significant increase from 82.4% in 2023.
In 2024, Norway registered 128,691 new passenger car registrations, representing a 1.4% increase compared to the previous year. Of these, 114,400 were electric, bringing the country closer to its ambitious 2025 goal: achieving 100% zero-emission vehicle sales.
“Although we have not yet achieved this goal, no other country approaches Norway’s level in terms of the share of electric vehicles,” proudly declared Øyvind Solberg Thorsen, director of the OFV. The rapid increase in electric car sales demonstrates the effectiveness of the incentives offered, but reaching the remaining 10% will require maintaining, or even strengthening, these measures.”
The 2024 market was dominated by well-established brands, with Tesla leading with a market share of 18.9%, followed by Volkswagen, Toyota, Volvo, and BMW. Chinese brands such as MG, BYD, Polestar, and XPeng also saw notable progress, entering the top 15 most sold brands.
Norway’s commitment to zero-emission vehicles dates back to 2016 when the government set the ambitious goal of ending sales of fossil fuel passenger cars by 2025. A series of incentives, such as tax exemptions, toll reductions, free parking, and charging subsidies, have played a key role in this global leadership.
In September 2024, the OFV reported that Norway had become the first country where electric cars outnumber fossil fuel vehicles on the roads.
