RER B: New Alstom Trains Delayed Again

RER B commuters will have to wait. The delivery of MI20 trains, promised since 2025, has been postponed to January 2027.

The project to renew the RER B trains, entrusted to Alstom, is experiencing a new setback. Initially expected in 2025, the first deliveries of the double-decker MI20 trains are now scheduled for January 2027, representing a delay of over a year. This is bad news for travelers on one of Europe’s busiest lines, where congestion during peak hours is a chronic issue.

According to Île-de-France Mobilités, SNCF, and RATP, this new delay results from both technical difficulties and new regulatory requirements. A European standard now mandates additional resistance testing for railway vehicles, even on lines without level crossings. These constraints have complicated the initial schedule, which had already been postponed several times.

To mitigate the impact of this delay, a plan of action has been presented by authorities and Alstom. The goal is to try to accelerate the production and delivery of the trains, while ensuring passenger comfort and safety. The MI20 trains are meant to increase capacity and make journeys more comfortable, improvements long awaited by users.

Despite these measures, frustration is palpable. Many hoped for a quick enhancement of transport conditions on this strategic line. The Île-de-France region assures they are putting pressure on Alstom to meet the new schedule and avoid any further delays.
