Volvo FH Aero 500 I-Save, the new camel of heavy trucks

In a sector where operating costs are essential, Volvo offers an innovative solution with its FH Aero 500 equipped with the I-Save pack.

Thanks to optimized aerodynamics and advanced engine technology, this model promises up to 5% fuel savings. But what about real-world conditions? And most importantly, does this gain translate into genuine long-term profitability?

The Volvo FH Aero benefits from new European regulations allowing longer cabins to improve aerodynamics. With a front end extended by 24 cm, air is better directed around the cab, thus reducing resistance and fuel consumption. The result: less energy loss, better autonomy, and reduced CO₂ emissions.

I-Save: a technology to go further

The I-Save pack includes several innovations aimed at optimizing consumption:

• D13TC 500 hp Engine – Turbo Compound: recovers exhaust gases’ energy to produce additional power.
• I-Shift 12-speed transmission: smooth gear changes to limit consumption.
• I-See System: an adaptive cruise control that adjusts engine speed according to the topography.

During a test conducted by Trucker, the Volvo FH Aero with I-Save showed an average consumption of 23.49 l/100 km, representing a 4.47% improvement compared to its predecessor. But Volvo is not solely focused on savings: the FH Aero is also designed for comfort and safety:

• Noise reduction (60 dB(A) at 85 km/h).
• Digital cameras replacing mirrors, improving visibility and reducing aerodynamic drag.

Profitability: a quickly recouped investment

The additional cost of the I-Save pack is estimated between €5,000 and €6,000, while the full version of the Volvo FH Aero could cost between €120,000 and €125,000. Thanks to fuel savings, the return on investment is quick:

• Annual savings per truck: approximately €2,390.
• Return on investment for the I-Save pack alone: 2 years.
• Return on investment for a full FH Aero: about 4 years.

For a fleet of 50 trucks, total savings amount to nearly €600,000 over 5 years and €1.2 million over 10 years.
