Mercedes brings its F1 cars to Silverstone in an electric truck

Mercedes AMG F1 has chosen the 100% electric eActros 600 to transport its single-seaters to the Silverstone circuit this weekend.

On the sidelines of the British Grand Prix, the Mercedes AMG F1 team once again demonstrates its commitment to making Formula 1 more sustainable. For the journey between the charming town of Brackley, where its factory is located, and the Silverstone circuit, the team has opted to replace its usual diesel trucks with three 100% electric Mercedes eActros 600. A strong symbol, albeit not a true logistical revolution.

Because the distance between the two sites is only… 50 kilometers! But the initiative serves as an example. These next-generation trucks are equipped with a 600 kWh LFP battery, providing up to 621 km of range, with fast charging times of 20 to 80% in just 25 minutes. It goes without saying that the round trip will pose no issues, and the trucks won’t even need to recharge between the two trips!

Beyond the geographical anecdote, this initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce the carbon footprint. Since 2022, Mercedes has successfully experimented with HVO100 fuel, a biofuel derived from hydrogenated vegetable oils. As a result, by 2024, 98% of the team’s European transport has been carried out with this renewable fuel.

F1 on a more responsible trajectory

This is a nice way to remind us that Formula 1 is already committed to decarbonization. As of today, all the single-seaters on the grid are powered by 100% renewable fuels, without fossil energy. Even better, their energy efficiency far exceeds that of any production engine: over 50% thermal efficiency, a record in the automotive world.

So yes, running electric trucks between Brackley and Silverstone won’t change the planet. But it contributes to a deeper cultural shift, where innovation in service of performance also becomes a driver of environmental responsibility. F1 remains an extraordinary technological showcase. And if it can help electrify the roads… even the shortest ones, let’s not hold back on the momentum.
