Tesla is transforming its famous key card into a versatile tool with the MultiPass, a new feature that allows drivers to charge at non-Tesla stations while centralizing billing and tracking through the mobile app. Until now, the card primarily served to unlock and start the cars, and authenticate at Superchargers. Now, it becomes a simple and convenient way to pay for and manage charging sessions at third-party charging points.

The operation is very intuitive. The user activates the MultiPass option in the Tesla app, then associates their card with the NFC of their smartphone. The app indicates compatible charging points and automatically records the history of off-network Tesla charges. Billing remains centralized on the Tesla account, but the rates charged depend on the charging station operators. Drivers will need to check the cost of electricity before each charge to avoid any surprises.

An expanded offering without renouncing the Supercharger strategy

Currently, the service is reserved for the Netherlands, but Tesla announces a forthcoming rollout in other European countries. This advancement represents a real gain in simplicity and comfort, especially for owners facing the diversity of charging networks. Gone are the days of multiple cards, apps, or subscriptions; everything is now accessible from a single interface.
