TGV M: the new train almost on track
This page is translated from the original post "TGV M : le nouveau train presque sur les rails" in French.

Ordered in 115 units by SNCF, the new-generation TGV promises a 32% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 20% increase in onboard surface area.
Despite some delays due to the health crisis, the fifth-generation TGV is definitely on track. “The first trains will be delivered at the end of 2024” explains Jean-Baptiste Eyméoud, President of Alstom France, “then we will be able to supply twelve per year“, until 2036.

The initial routes to be served by SNCF will be Paris-Lyon and Paris-Marseille under the colors of TGV inOui and TGV Ouigo. This new train can accommodate up to 740 seats, thanks to its increased onboard surface area by 20%. Accessibility, especially for people with reduced mobility, and onboard services (more powerful WIFI) are also expected to be improved compared to current trains.
A more environmentally friendly train
Another announced advantage of this new train is its lower energy consumption. Alstom claims up to 20% savings compared to trains today. To achieve this, the TGV M is expected to be lighter, more aerodynamic, and equipped with engines with optimized efficiency. These savings are hoped to be reflected in train ticket prices, as many users complain about the fairly high cost of train travel. Finally, Alstom announces that 97% of the components used are recyclable and that CO2 emissions should decrease by 32%.
This project is also expected to generate 4,000 jobs and involve 10 Alstom sites across France: Belfort, La Rochelle, Villeurbanne, Ornans, Le Creusot, Tarbes, Toulouse, Petit Quevilly, Saint-Ouen, and Valenciennes.
