Trolleybus Nancy 2024

It was a special feature in Nancy; the trolleybus was just another mode of transport in the 1980s and 1990s. In service exactly from 1982 and serving 3 lines in the metropolitan area, it was replaced by a more modern solution in 2000. But in turn, the TVR, also called “pneumatic-tired tramway,” will pass the relay to a new-generation trolleybus.

The trolleybus returns in bi-mode with Hess

In August 2021, the Métropole made a decision and presented the trolleybus arriving in 2023. The decision was made against the traditional rail tramway option, which would have cost much more, roughly 500 million euros.

Electric, the trolleybus will thus be closer to a bus than the current tramway. But what will it look like? A change for this new version of the trolleybus is that it will feature batteries. This will allow it to be more versatile, notably connecting places without overhead electric lines.

The authorities studied proposals from two companies for the project. On January 6, they announced Hess as the chosen manufacturer. The Swiss company was favored over other Belgian vehicles by Vanhool, based on criteria such as reliability, maneuverability, capacity, and delivery time.

Start in Nancy postponed to 2024, but TRV ends in 2023

It will take several more months of discussions to fully define the trolleybus. Grand Nancy announced that decisions regarding interior layout and batteries will be made by summer 2022. Originally scheduled to start in 2023, the electric trolleybus will join the Stan network in 2024 on line 1 of the former TVR. Between the end of the TVR and the trolleybus introduction, a bus service will temporarily connect the routes.

Deliveries will take place over several weeks, with a complete fleet expected by April 2024. Lines 2 to 5 will not have access to this transport mode. They will continue to operate with a high-service bus (BHNS).

For the longer term, Mathieu Klein, president of the metropolis, does not exclude tramway development. “I believe in the tramway, I voted for it,” he announced on France Bleu last August, “I think the Nancy area needs a tramway considering the number of people who commute for work, study, shopping, and living.”
