New Line 13 in Paris: Why It’s a Revolution!
This page is translated from the original post "Nouvelle Ligne 13 à Paris : pourquoi il s’agit d’une révolution !" in French.

Often criticized for its crowded subways, Line 13 will enter the era of modernization. It is expected to offer a significantly better quality of service with complete automation.
The Île-de-France Board of Directors has just approved the automation of Line 13. Good news for the line’s users, who haven’t had the best reputation. However, patience will be needed, as more than 10 years will have passed between the decision and the complete automation of the Métro 13.
Line 13 is one of the most heavily used in the Paris network. Commuters often find themselves in crowded trains during rush hours, although the situation has somewhat improved with the extension of Line 14 in 2020. Automation should at least partially resolve this issue, as it will be accompanied by an increase in the number of trains. On average, there will be 40 trains per hour. This higher frequency will help absorb the expected increase in ridership in the coming years.
A Brand New Metro in 2027
The automation project cannot be implemented with the current trains. Therefore, new ones will arrive gradually starting in 2027. The new trains will be both more spacious and more comfortable. The introduction of the MF19 – the official name of the chosen metro – should also improve the line’s reliability.
Before full automation, significant work will also be needed on the platforms, including building glass facades with platform doors. The task ahead is quite colossal, and full automation will only be achieved from 2035… if deadlines are met.
Financially, the project is estimated to cost 837 million euros, excluding rolling stock. The investment is covered by Île-de-France Mobilité.
