Candela P-8: an electric water taxi that flies on the water

Known for its astonishing electrically powered hydrofoils, the Swedish manufacturer Candela is set to add a new model to its lineup: the P-8.
It is in the Italian city of Venice that Candela chose to unveil the P-8 Passenger, a new electric water taxi. True to the technology that has earned the manufacturer its reputation, the P-8 flies – or nearly – just a few centimeters above the water. It will go into production this fall.
Developed by some fifty engineers from diverse backgrounds (aerospace, computer science, etc.), Candela’s boats operate with computer-guided foils. The wings deploy automatically once the boat reaches a certain speed. Then, Candela’s software controls and adjusts the height based on navigation conditions to ensure a smooth ride. Passengers are thus assured they will no longer suffer from seasickness.
Autonomy 2 to 3 times greater
Candela’s developed technology would reduce energy consumption by about 80% compared to a conventional boat, thus gaining precious nautical miles of range. On the P8, a full charge allows for approximately 50 nautical miles. According to the Swedish manufacturer, this is 2 to 3 times more than what competing models can achieve.

Moreover, Candela’s hydrofoil has another significant advantage: it preserves marine life, or at least causes less impact on the abyss than a traditional boat. The waves generated by the fins would be too small to have a real impact on corals and fish.
Equipped with a large refrigerated cabin, the P-8 can accommodate 8 people (6 passengers and 2 crew members). It is aimed at nautical transport companies that, according to Candela, could save significantly by using it. The cost of a full recharge is estimated at about ten euros.
