BMW CE 04 essai scooter électrique

BMW establishes a stabilized orbit in the world of electric maxi-scooters with its CE 04 with a stunning look. A very pleasant preview of a highly refined new approach to urban mobility.

Don’t be fooled by its lunar appearance, the BMW CE 04 has its wheels firmly on the ground! The second generation of the Bavarian electric maxi-scooter (after the C Evolution) is lighter (231 kg, 34 kg less). It also reduces its price (€12,150 before ecological bonus deductions, which has decreased by €3,500). However, this scooter also sacrifices some range (130 km, 30 km less). Still capable of commuting in suburban areas thanks to its top speed of 120 km/h for comfortable highway riding, aided by its XXL wheelbase that enhances stability.

Its architecture is guided by the layout of its various components. Notably, an 8.5 kWh useful battery composed of 40 Samsung lithium-ion cells under the floor (55 kg). A practical trunk on top can hold a full helmet. Behind the cable, you’ll find the motor and accessories assembly, water-cooled.

Two power levels are available. The first is a “light” version for A1 license (B + 7 hours training), limited to 23 kW (31 hp). The second is a “full power” version for A2/A motorcycle license holders, with 31 kW (42 hp). Both deliver the same torque of 62 Nm. Regarding charging, there are also two options. The standard Type 2 charger of just 2.3 kW takes about 4 hours and 20 minutes to go from 0 to 100%. A faster 1 hour and 40-minute charge is possible with the optional 6.9 kW charger, priced at €1,240. Daily, it can charge from 20% to 80% in just 45 minutes.

Rigor and Connectivity for the BMW CE 04

With a characteristic whine, the Bavarian scooter’s rapid accelerations delight us each time at a green light: 2.6 seconds from 0 to 50 km/h. But it also handles smoothly at low speeds. Thanks to its very low center of gravity and accessible seat, even smaller riders will find it manageable. For maneuvering, a reverse gear is included. Standard traction control and ABS are included. More advanced versions capable of accounting for the machine’s angle are available as options.

The well-rigid chassis and the rigorous cycle parts offer a very stable behavior, without sacrificing comfort. Several modes are available: Eco, Rain, Road, and optionally Dynamic. They feature different regeneration levels but always high, allowing riding without touching the brakes by anticipating turns or stops at traffic lights.

Display and Consumption of the BMW CE 04

The standard large-sized (10.25-inch Full HD) display is very clear. It offers multiple display options, controlled by a handlebar wheel and a menu button. Navigation on the map from the BMW app can take up the full available width. Alternatively, you can choose instrumentation showing the regeneration rate/energy consumption, with a window for directional instructions. The smartphone compartment is well-protected in a sealed, ventilated, USB-equipped hatch.

Our consumption averages around 7 kWh/100 km in light driving, providing reassurance about real-world autonomy, which exceeds 100 km at this rate, with the homologated WMTC range of 130 km. Enough to enjoy the true pleasure of this extraordinary machine without constraints in everyday use.
