This electric Tricity project is not initiated by Yamaha, but by the companies MAHLE Powertrain and White Motorcycle Concepts. They are pursuing it to meet the needs of law enforcement agencies.

An electric Yamaha Tricity with a range of about 160 km, and which quickly recharges its battery: this is the goal set by the British companies MAHLE Powertrain and White Motorcycle Concepts. This specification was established to address the needs of law enforcement. Indeed, the electric Tricity will be targeted at them, not the general public.

White Motorcycle Concepts has already had the opportunity to work on the Tricity in the past, as part of a project carried out with Northamptonshire police and other emergency services. The research resulted in the creation of a hybrid Tricity, the WMC300FR. But this time, the goal is to eliminate all traces of an internal combustion engine, turning the three-wheeled scooter into a fully electric vehicle. The conversion will be based on the Tricity 300, which will become a 125 equivalent following the transformation. No motorcycle license will be required to operate it.

The Northamptonshire police are once again involved in this project, which has received official support from the UK’s Department of Transport and Innovation. MAHLE Powertrain and White Motorcycle Concepts have not yet disclosed the exact specifications and performance of their Yamaha retrofitted, likely because these details have not yet been finalized. The two partners still need to work on the battery issues and select the technology that best meets their expectations. MAHLE Powertrain’s simulation tools will play a key role in this stage. They will also help determine the optimal configuration of the powertrain. Once the electric Tricity is ready, it will be produced in a small series. Commercialization for the consumer market does not appear to be planned at this time.
