Moto électrique ROAM

No fuss but respectable performance and a highly competitive price: meet Roam’s electric motorcycle.

Founded in Sweden in 2017, Roam aims to develop electric mobility in Africa. The company, originally called Opibus, relocated to Kenya to better assess the continent’s needs and test its various solutions in the field. In addition to working on the retrofitting of existing vehicles, it has also developed its own electric two-wheeler.

The motorcycle was designed locally, considering the specific challenges of this region. Powered by a lithium-ion battery of 2.9 kWh, it can travel around 80 km between charges. If needed, a second battery can double the range. Charging power reaches 6.6 kW on an appropriate station, allowing full recharge in 2.5 hours. Since the batteries are removable, it is also possible to swap a flat one for a full one in seconds.

Modest Power but Good Performance

Despite a modest power of 3,000 watts (8,650 watts peak), Roam’s motorcycle manages to deliver decent performance. It can reach 90 km/h – its top speed – in just 5 seconds. The centrally positioned motor is connected to the wheel via a standard chain.

Most likely for cost reasons, Roam opted for drum brakes on both front and rear. However, the manufacturer clearly did not skimp on lighting, which is provided by a front LED headlight. The two-wheeler is also equipped with a 3-inch TFT screen and a large seat that facilitates two-up riding.

Manufactured in Africa, the motorcycle is sold for $1,200, roughly €1,140. According to Roam, this price is roughly comparable to that of a small internal combustion motorcycle in Africa. The second battery adds $550 to the cost.

The Swedish company is already accepting pre-orders. It plans to deliver its first bikes during 2022.
