Volkswagen ID. Buzz: Craftsmen Rather Than Large Families?

Comment
Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo

With its new long Cargo, the Volkswagen electric Combi caters to professionals after having disappointed its family-oriented vocation with questionable choices.

An irresistible look, a mythical heritage, and a promise of escape: the Volkswagen ID. Buzz had everything to charm families. However, at its launch in 2022, this descendant of the Combi had to deal with a difficult-to-understand configuration: only five seats in a vehicle measuring 4.71 meters! Large families had to wait until 2024 to discover a long version capable of accommodating seven occupants.

Does this initial missed opportunity justify calling it a commercial failure? The figures suggest a more nuanced view. In 2025, global deliveries reached 60,700 units, up 102%. However, nearly 46% pertained to the Cargo. In France, this utility variant even represented 59% of the 1,923 registrations recorded in 2024. Behind the image of family vacations, professionals were already proving to be a crucial market.

Change of Direction

This is precisely the clientele that Volkswagen now intends to better serve with its three-seat Cargo featuring a longer wheelbase. The extension of 25 centimeters increases the cargo volume from 3.9 to 4.4 m³. Most importantly, the wider sliding doors allow for a European pallet to be loaded from the side. The second side door and the wooden floor are standard equipment.

An 86 kWh battery, engine options of 286 or 340 hp, and a towing capacity of 1,800 kg complete this evolution. This should attract tradespeople, even if the payload remains limited: 700 kg maximum with rear-wheel drive, 606 kg with all-wheel drive. The starting price in Germany is 48,490 euros before tax.

Since its introduction in 2022, the Cargo continues its development with tangible improvements. The electric Combi retains its charm, but Volkswagen now offers more reasons to appeal to those primarily seeking a work tool.
