After the surfboard, the flamethrower, the tequila, or the whistle, Tesla is launching… a microphone!

The manufacturer took advantage of the Chinese New Year to deploy a major update to the infotainment system software, numbered 2022.2.1 (like February 1, 2022). Developed by the Chinese division specifically for China, this update notably brings an application called Leishi KTV, a Chinese karaoke service.

Most notably, Tesla is launching a new accessory to accompany this app, the “TeslaMic”. Sold on the official online store among floor mats, mudguards, and USB keys, it is already out of stock. Its product page has been returning an error all day, which could indicate high demand.

The TeslaMic consists of a pair of wireless microphones that connect to the onboard computer via what looks like a USB receiver, which can be plugged into the central glove box or in the armrest storage. It obviously offers sound effects like reverb, essential for karaoke.

Incredibly entertaining recharges

Contrary to what a layperson might think, this novelty is not surprising coming from Tesla. The onboard computer actually offers all kinds of entertainment applications, to pass the time while parked, especially during recharges. It thus offers Netflix, YouTube, or Twitch, but also a wide range of video games, including Cuphead, a “true” game released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Elon Musk even hopes to launch “AAA” video games like Cyberpunk 2077, now that Teslas are equipped with an AMD Ryzen processor derived from the processor of the latest PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.

In fact, since the 10.0 update in September 2019, Tesla already offered a “Caraoke” feature (a contraction of the English car and karaoke), with a Western catalog, a minimalist interface, and above all… singing a cappella!

The Leishi KTV app, meanwhile, is worthy of the Chinese enthusiasm for karaoke — China reportedly has 50,000 karaoke rooms — with a local catalog and true HD clips.

The TeslaMic was sold for 1200 yuan, the equivalent of 170 euros. In the absence of restocking, it will probably end up on eBay auctions, like tequila in its time, which fetched ten times its price.
