Peugeot Launches a New Small Engine
Peugeot launches a new three-cylinder petrol engine designed to improve driving pleasure and energy efficiency.
This new petrol engine from Peugeot, named Turbo 100, is intended to equip the brand’s city cars and compact SUVs. This next-generation engine will be introduced in the Peugeot 208 starting in March 2026, followed by the Peugeot 2008 from May 2026. Although the lion brand does not mention it, it is hard not to imagine a bright future for this engine in hybrid and plug-in hybrid models!
This three-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1,199 cm³ develops 101 hp (74 kW) at 5,500 rpm and delivers a maximum torque of 205 Nm from 1,750 rpm. It notably features the integration of a variable geometry turbocharger, a technology that is still rare in small petrol engines. This aims to improve low-rev response and facilitate acceleration, especially in urban use or during overtaking.
Make the Puretech Forget
According to the manufacturer, this engine represents a third generation of petrol block, featuring about 70% new components. Among the evolutions are a new turbocharger, a high-pressure direct injection system, and modifications to the cylinder block and pistons.
Energy efficiency relies on a direct injection system operating at 350 bar, combined with optimized valve timing and combustion utilizing the Miller cycle with a high compression ratio. The goal is to reduce mechanical losses and improve thermal efficiency.
Reliability is also a development focus. The Turbo 100 now adopts a timing chain designed to offer better durability than previous systems, including the not-so-glorious Puretech. The pistons, rings, and internal components have been redesigned to enhance robustness and limit oil consumption.
During its development phase, this engine underwent over 30,000 hours of bench testing and more than 3 million kilometers driven by prototypes under various usage conditions.
