An electric bicycle powered by cigarette batteries!

British YouTuber Chris Doel managed to make a powerful battery using disposable e-cigarettes
E-cigarettes, does that ring a bell? They are the small, colorful disposable electronic cigarettes sold in many tobacco shops. Truly disastrous for health and the planet, they are unfortunately trendy among young people at the moment. Each year, 260 million e-cigarettes are discarded in the UK.
Another phenomenon gaining momentum right now is the rise of electric bikes. And this has inspired Chris Doel, a British YouTuber. He had a revolutionary idea: to build an electric bike battery using recycled puff batteries. For this, he demonstrates the trick in a YouTube video which has been viewed nearly 800,000 times in two weeks.
Batteries within a battery
Bike batteries and cigarette batteries are both composed of a similar assembly of small lithium-ion cells. The DIY enthusiast recovered the cells from puff batteries to assemble them into a holder made with a 3D printer. He fully recharged this battery made up of 130 cells and put it to the test. In the end, it allowed him to travel 33 km at a maximum speed of over 50 km/h, without ever pressing the pedal.
These are very interesting data. The range isn’t perfect, but Chris probably could have traveled a longer distance if he had better managed his speed. The result of his experiment is noteworthy and highlights the ecological absurdity of selling disposable e-cigarettes. Let’s hope that Chris Doel’s approach helps raise awareness. Note that the support used for his battery is available as open-source on Printables. If you have puffs, a bike, and a 3D printer, you can try the experiment yourself at home.
