Tesla plans to plant 1 million trees at its Berlin factory

Heavily criticized for the deforestation required for the expansion of its German factory, Tesla has decided to replant afterward.

Clear and then replant. Like a broken vase that has been glued back together, the result is no longer the same. Heavily criticized by German environmental activists for the extent of the deforestation necessary for the construction – and now the expansion – of its Berlin Gigafactory (we’re talking about an area of nearly 450 football fields!), Tesla wants to show its good faith.

To this end, the American manufacturer has committed to replant one million trees in 2024 alone. In reality, it only involves planting each tree cut in the past, no more no less. Except that we are only talking about the initial trees cut during the first phase of construction of the Berlin Gigafactory.

In the near future, the expansion works will begin, and with them the obligation to deforest, again and again. Tesla has also committed to replanting each tree uprooted. But their growth will take years, while biodiversity will have disappeared.

Beware of reforestation!

Alas, replanting a forest is not as beautiful in reality as it is on paper. Certainly, the initiative comes from a good sentiment, but it is mostly demagogic. Planting a million trees has many ecological drawbacks in a traumatized territory.

Thus, it is important not to resort to monoculture, that is, planting a single species of tree. This can reduce biodiversity and make ecosystems more vulnerable to diseases and pests. Introducing non-native trees can also disrupt local ecosystems, compete with local plants, and affect wildlife.

Some tree species can alter soil composition, affect nutrient availability, and modify hydrological cycles. Trees have varied water needs, and planting a large number of trees in dry areas can deplete local water resources.

Planting trees in areas where carbon is significantly stored in the soil, like grasslands or peat bogs, can release more carbon than they sequester.

Finally, there remains the question of maintaining these new forests, and especially of their sanctuarization. Planting only to clear again in 5, 10, 20, or 30 years, what is the point besides having a good conscience in the moment and greenwashing one’s image?

Tesla relies on German environmental expertise to best replant this million trees, with a carefully chosen variety of species. Now, let’s give time some time.
