Opel Aims for All-Electric Vehicles by 2028

Owned by the Stellantis Group, the Opel brand is accelerating its electric powertrain development and aims to offer a 100% electric lineup within 5 years.

The merger of Opel with Stellantis has allowed the iconic brand to modernize its image and offer more attractive models. Notably, the latest Opel Astra, which we will soon review in a plug-in hybrid GSe version. Also worth mentioning are the Mokka and the small Corsa, which ranked 7th among the best-selling cars in Europe in 2022.

For electric vehicles, four passenger models are equipped with this technology in the lineup: the Corsa-e, Mokka-e, Combo-e Life, and Zafira-e Life.

In 2023, however, the company’s ambitions are significantly higher. Opel aims to become a key player in electrification, with a planned €130 million investment in the Eisenach plant in Germany, known for producing the Opel Grandland SUV. Previously available with combustion engines and plug-in hybrid options, this flagship model will adopt the STLA Medium platform for its second generation and will feature an electric motor. Opel aims to start production of the Opel Grandland-e in the second half of 2024.

A Rapid Shift in Strategy

“Eisenach, the smallest of our German plants, has demonstrated its dynamism in quality improvements,” said Arnaud Deboeuf, Stellantis Chief Manufacturing Officer. “The allocation of the STLA Medium, one of our new 100% electric platforms, to Eisenach will enable the talented team there to continue reducing costs and improving vehicle quality, for the greater satisfaction of our customers.”

This announcement was followed by an even more ambitious one: Opel’s goal to become a 100% electric brand by 2028. A timeline that seems tight, especially considering Germany’s recent turnaround on e-fuels. At Mobiwisy, we will be watching this closely!
