Load your driver’s license onto your Smartphone

Gone are the days of overflowing cardholders. After bank cards, it’s now the turn of the driving license to go digital.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed the rollout of the digital driving license starting Wednesday, February 14. Nostalgic for the classic pink multi-fold license are in mourning, but the more forgetful will have plenty to rejoice about. All holders of a French driving license can now download its digital version to their smartphone. One app, an identification, and you’re set.

From pink to the net

First, you need to download the “France Identity” app available on iOS and Android. You then have to enter your ANTS credentials (National Secure Document Agency). You probably already have them if you’ve recently renewed your identity documents. If not, you’ll need to create your account, which takes only a few minutes… and will be useful for your next request for Identity Card, Passport, or Vehicle Registration, among others.

Next, you need to download a restricted information extract (RIR) from the website My Driving Points using your ANTS credentials and your license number. A QR code is provided with the document; just scan it with your smartphone, and you’re done. We tested it this morning, and it really is straightforward. Some steps took a bit longer, but we were definitely not the only ones browsing those pages to test the new service.

The license before other documents

The license will be accessible even without network connection. After the digital ID card, this is another step towards a comprehensive digital keyring that can hold all mandatory legal documents: vehicle registration, insurance certificate, Crit’Air,….

For conspiracy enthusiasts, rest assured. All the information needed to obtain this digital license is already in the government’s possession!
