The green card will be over on April 1st!

On April 1st, the insurance certificate will be digitalized for all vehicles. What do you need to do to be compliant?

First of all, this is not an April Fool’s joke, and regarding what you need to do… actually, nothing special, other than being insured, which is an absolute legal requirement to be able to drive. Until now, your insurer provided you with a certificate confirming your compliance with this obligation, the famous green card. Starting from April 1st, this green card will be replaced by the Insured Vehicles File (FVA), which law enforcement has had access to since 2019.

From April 1st, you will no longer receive a green card each year when renewing your contract. You will no longer have to display a certificate on your windshield. In case of a check, you will logically no longer be required to present proof. Law enforcement will be able to consult a central file to access all information related to the vehicle’s insurance.

Nothing to do but to be compliant

No action is required on your part as this file is updated by insurance companies. Insurers have a period of 72 hours to report any new subscriptions or modifications to an existing insurance contract. This may involve a cancellation, but also a modification of the coverage, the insured vehicle, or simply the age and therefore the obligations of the driver.

During this 3-day period granted to insurers to update the FVA, the vehicle will not yet be listed in the database. No panic, you will of course be able to drive and in case of a check, you will just need to present the Insured Vehicle Memo, a document provided by the insurer when signing the contract that will list all the information associated with the insured’s contract. The memo will be digital or printable, at your choice, to keep handy in case of need, in your vehicle or on your phone.
