In Las Vegas, Tesla is experimenting with innovative underground mobility, the Las Vegas Loop, inspired by the Hyperloop concept.

Unlike the original Hyperloop project, which envisioned capsules traveling at very high speeds in vacuum tubes, the Loop relies on Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles traveling through tunnels dug by The Boring Company. The objective is to quickly connect key sites such as the Las Vegas Convention Center, hotels, or stadiums, avoiding traffic jams.

A recurring question arises: do the cars operate in autonomous mode in the Loop? The answer is nuanced. Today, some Teslas use supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, allowing the car to move with minimal driver intervention. However, an operator is always on board for safety reasons. In other words, it is not yet a fully autonomous service without human presence, and Tesla continues to test and improve the system.

A genuine experience

The journey through the tunnel is surprising: the sensation of gliding beneath the city is enhanced by the narrow environment and the silence of electric vehicles. The ride is quick, direct, and smooth, offering a concrete glimpse of what urban underground mobility could look like in the future.

Tesla and The Boring Company are positioning themselves here as a real-world laboratory. The Loop illustrates how semi-autonomous driving can transform urban travel and paves the way for fully autonomous operations, a goal the brand aims for in the coming years.

This “Tesla Loop” does, however, spark debates. Some see it as an efficient and scalable solution for congested cities, while others point out its limited capacity compared to traditional public transport. No problem, Tesla and The Boring Company embrace this positioning. It is not about replacing the subway, but rather offering a complementary, more flexible, and quicker-to-deploy alternative.

In Las Vegas, this real-world laboratory provides a concrete glimpse of what urban underground mobility could look like tomorrow. An ambitious vision, true to the Tesla spirit, which continues to dig—literally and figuratively—new paths.
