We will soon be driving at 30 km/h in Poitiers

Like many other cities, Poitiers will lower the speed limit for cars and motorcycles.

While main roads are gradually returning to 90 km/h instead of 80 km/h, large cities are becoming increasingly strict in enforcing speed limits. Thus, Paris, Lille, Clermont-Ferrand, Limoges, Lyon, Bordeaux, and now Poitiers are affected by this measure.

The expected benefits for the municipality are numerous, starting with a reduction in serious accidents. City centers now host a mix of cars, public transportation, motorcycles, pedestrians, and increasingly bicycles and scooters. A cocktail that increases risks.

An advantage also for residents

Objectively, driving at 50 km/h on some narrow roads seems excessive, and reaction time to avoid obstacles is too long. Reducing speed to 30 km/h would limit this factor and save lives. This remains a priority.

Other anticipated benefits include reduced pollution and noise nuisances. A wish expressed by residents for a more pleasant environment.

All traffic routes will be affected

The schedule is set for September 1st, the date of the official speed reduction. The 30 km/h limit will be applied throughout the city, except on André Malraux road.

“The services are still working to refine the measure, particularly to establish the list of roads where this maximum speed will not be enforced: ring roads, etc.“, officials clarified to our colleagues at Centre Presse. A major investment will also be made to modify signs and road markings.
