How to Know if Your Car is Affected by the Anti-SUV Vote?

Starting September 1, 2024, a new anti-SUV parking fee will take effect in Paris. Are you affected?

78,121 Parisians, or 5.68% of the 1.3 million eligible voters, decided on Sunday to penalize not the SUVs, but the heaviest cars by increasing their parking fees in the capital.

First and foremost, you do not need to ask your car’s manufacturer whether your vehicle is a Sport Utility Vehicle, or a despised SUV. The new parking fees will apply to cars exceeding a certain empty weight, regardless of their age, dimensions, or body type.

If your internal combustion or hybrid vehicle weighs more than 1.6 tons or if your electric vehicle weighs more than 2 tons, you will now have to pay 18 euros for one hour of parking in central Paris (1st to 11th arrondissement) compared to 6 euros currently, and 12 euros for outer districts (12th to 20th arrondissement) compared to 4 euros today.

Residents of Paris, who were the only ones able to vote, will be exempt from this. Of course, provided they are within their residential tariff zone. Professionals with registered vehicles, taxis, and people with reduced mobility will also be exempt, and thankfully so!

Currently, failure to pay the parking fee exposes you to an FPS (Parking Post Fee). It is no longer a fine or a violation but a fee. In short, you must pay a hefty fee if you skip the small fee when running your errands, for example… The FPS is 75 euros in the 1st to 11th districts and 50 euros in districts 12 to 20. It corresponds to 6 hours of parking, which is the maximum allowed for residents according to the official Paris City Hall text.
