Electric Trucks Scania Made in France

The Swedish manufacturer Scania takes a new step in its industrial development in France.

On the occasion of the Choose France summit, the government announced a €70 million investment from Scania in its Angers plant to launch the production of electric trucks intended for the European market.

This decision confirms the strategic role of the Scania plant in Angers, one of the three main industrial sites of the group in Europe alongside Sweden and the Netherlands. Employing nearly 1,500 employees, the Angers site will be expanded with the construction of a new building and modernization of its assembly lines to accommodate the manufacturing of electric heavy-duty vehicles. Several hundred jobs could be created in the long term.

France at the forefront

The objective is to strengthen the supply of electric trucks produced in France, while the electrification of road freight transport remains limited in the country. Electric heavy-duty vehicles currently represent only 2% of new truck sales in France, compared to 7% in Germany and 18% in the Netherlands. To support this transition, the state has recently increased acquisition aids up to €100,000 per vehicle.

Already strongly established in the French industry, Scania does not limit itself to the road transport market. The manufacturer is also a supplier of military equipment for the French army. In partnership with Saab, Scania France has signed a contract with the General Directorate of Armament (DGA) for the provision of 16 tactical V3P vehicles intended for the French armed forces. These versatile carriers will carry Giraffe 1X radars as part of enhancing air defense capabilities.

With this major investment in Angers, Scania France reaffirms its desire to make France a benchmark industrial hub for electric trucks while consolidating its presence in the strategic sectors of transport and defense.
