Paris Respire 2022: A Car-Free Day

The capital renews the Paris Respire operation this Sunday, September 18, during which no vehicles, even electric, can circulate.

Launched in 2016, the “Paris Respire” operation has now become part of Parisians’ routine and coincides with the European Heritage Days taking place on September 17 and 18, 2022.

So, expect many pedestrians, cyclists, or scooter users in the streets of the Capital. As a result, cars are expected to be scarce due to numerous police controls planned and the dissuasive fine. Offenders face a fifth-class fine (€135). For drivers with a medical or family emergency, a valid proof will need to be presented.

In the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th districts, streets will be more closed off and controls will be more intense. Only buses, emergency vehicles, and taxis will be allowed to circulate, at a maximum speed of 20 km/h.

In other districts, buses, emergency vehicles, taxis, and VTCs will also be allowed to circulate, with a maximum speed of 30 km/h.

Paris Respire: incentives to ride a bike

Bicycle enthusiasts can also benefit from 45 minutes of free Vélib’ rentals if they register on the Velib’ website. Additionally, the Upway company is launching a bike rental operation throughout the day at Place de la Bastille (12th arrondissement).
