Rad Power RadExpand 5: The American folding bike is being refined

The RadExpand 5 foldable bike from Rad Power improves an existing model but will be new to France, priced around 1,300 euros.

Rad Power Bikes is somewhat the Tesla of electric bikes. Having started around the same time in 2007, originating from the United States, with direct-to-consumer sales, the company is now the largest in its field in the country.

Founded by Mike Radenbaugh, Rad Power now operates in other markets, including Canada and Europe, including France. The brand claims to have sold over 400,000 units since its inception. Its lineup continues to improve, after recent models like RadRunner, RadCity, and RadRover 2022.

A new foldable Rad Power

In early spring 2022, Rad Power announced its new bike. It is the RadExpand 5, an update of the RadMini not available in our region. This “fat bike” is a folding bike available in two frame types, one classic, and the other open “step-thru.” Here, the RadExpand 5 only offers the latter, aiming for versatility between urban and off-road riding.

More than just an update, the RadExpand changes significantly while keeping the same frame. Not suspension since it has a classic fork, it introduces a new adjustable stem to modify the riding position.

Its derailleur now Shimano with 7 speeds, the tires still CST 20-inch but wider model Big Boat by 25 mm, and the display upgraded to LED. It retains the Tektro 180 mm disc brakes, the 672 Wh capacity with a range of 72 kilometers, a 750 W motor, and a load capacity of 125 kg. The bike weighs a total of 28.3 kg, 4 kg more than before.

Release in April 2022

This RadExpand 5 has just been added to the US catalog. It is more affordable than the RadMini, priced at $1,299 (1,180 euros) compared to $1,499, despite including the rear rack (which is an optional $79 on the RadMini).

A characteristic of Rad Power bikes is the option to purchase either flat-pack for self-assembly or pre-assembled for an additional $199, although this choice is not available in our region.

This model will arrive in Europe in April 2022, but at an as-yet unknown price. Given the parity between euros and dollars, the RadExpand 5 is expected to cost around €1,299.
