The German company Convercycle designed this bike to be as simple as possible. At first glance, few things distinguish this model from a traditional bike. It’s by examining a few details that we get a clue: double kickstand and especially a frame extending all the way to behind the wheel.
Because the Convercycle works like this: you just lift and unfold the rear part of the frame to extend the wheelbase. The bike becomes 70 cm longer in cargo configuration, with a wide space between the saddle and the rear wheel. The chain is also extended to connect the crankset and the hub with 8 gears, without any additional transformation steps. It can easily hold a box, supporting up to 80 kg of load. The advantages are numerous, combining the compactness of a normal bike for parking or daily life, and the functionality of a cargo bike.
A heavy weight, but an electric version to reduce effort
The downside is that the bike weighs 31 kg, twice as much as a classic bike. With this and a full load, riding might seem complicated, but an electric version exists. With less effort, the electric Convercycle features a Bafang 45 Nm motor at the front, with 5 assistance modes. The removable battery integrated into the frame has a capacity of 11 Ah (396 Wh), providing about 60 to 65 km of range in minimal assistance mode. Additionally, this model offers the option of a Enviolo rotary shift, which is easier to use.
The price of this folding cargo bike? The muscular Convercycle is €2,899, and the electric version costs €4,299. Available throughout Europe, it can be delivered in France, but with a fee of €298. However, it can only be tested in Frankfurt before purchase, near Convercycle’s headquarters.
