Niu launches an electric bike with two series-connected batteries

The Chinese manufacturer Niu launches a new electric bike, the BQi C3 Pro, featuring the particularity of having two batteries as standard. So, great range?

The Milan EICMA 2022 Show was not just about scooters and motorcycles. The Chinese brand Niu, like others, took the opportunity to introduce bikes. “We want to expand our range of urban mobility products in Europe” declares Sieghart Michielsen, Niu’s international business director. The Chinese brand thus adds a third category after its scooters introduced in 2017 in France, and electric scooters.

Large capacity, but disappointing range?

Here is the Niu BQi C3 Pro, a new electric bike that appeared earlier this year in China, and is now being sold in the United States and Europe. Its particularity is that it has two batteries on either side of the open frame. Several bikes offer two batteries, but through an optional second one, not integrated, like Vanmoof. Fully integrated, they are also removable, allowing you to charge one at home, or even both at the same time.

Altogether, the Chinese bike integrates 920 Wh capacity (19.2 Ah at 48 V), but we would have hoped for more than 100 km of range. The upcoming Decathlon LD 920E Connect offers the same. The likely reason is the weight, which is quite high at 32 kg, huge for an electric bike! The 2A charger (at least visible in the US) will recharge each battery in about 5 hours.

The Niu BQi C3 Pro focuses on the belt

A small disappointment with this electric bike, especially since its motor is not central but on the rear hub. Too bad, because the front-rear battery layout on the frame was aimed at improving weight distribution. The torque of this electric unit is unknown, and it will have three assistance levels.

At least, we are satisfied with the choice of Gates belt for this city-oriented model. However, the gear ratio needs to be checked, as the Niu BQi C3 Pro does not include a continuous variable transmission like Enviolo Automatiq.

The 27.5-inch balloon tires are from Shaoyan, equipped with 180 mm cable disc brakes, while the typical Niu round front light is present. As for equipment, the fenders come standard. The rear rack is also included, supporting up to 30 kg at the back. Its compatibility with MIK mounting for accessories is unknown, but it does include rear lighting. Front and rear baskets, as well as mirrors, are optional.

The 3.5-inch touchscreen, including speed, mileage, duration, and battery gauges, sits above an adjustable-height handlebar, a good point for customizing the ideal riding position.

What is the price and availability for the BQi C3 Pro?

The Niu BQi C3 Pro electric bike will arrive in Europe around March 2023. The brand has not yet specified possible distributors, but it will be available in Niu stores. The price is €2,999, but is that justified? Not compared to the $1,999 of the same bike in North America. Yes, considering the high capacity of the batteries — less so for range — and the belt drive. We await more details on motor torque and connectivity.

New Niu electric scooters in 2023

Meanwhile, the Niu KQi1 Sport electric scooter expands the range at the lower end. Priced at €399, it will be available in France during 2023.

The manufacturer even plans child models starting from January with the KQi Youth (6-12 years) and KQi Youth+ (8-14 years). Priced at €299, they promise a 200 W motor and nearly 11 kilometers of range.
