Serial 1: Harley-Davidson launches electric ATVs

The Serial 1 electric bike brand from Harley-Davidson has new mountain bike models, the BASH/MTN and SWITCH/MTN.

In recent weeks, Serial 1 has expanded its catalog with its very first electric assist mountain bikes. To reduce costs, the bike platform is based on the MOSH/CTY.

Two New E-MTBs

The BASH/MTN was the first of the duo, produced in a limited edition of 1,050 units, half of which are in Europe. The key difference is the SR Suntour NC seat suspension, paired with Michelin E-Wild all-terrain tires. The price? $3,990, but the price in our markets is unknown.

The SWITCH/MTN is the second new bike. It features a suspended mountain fork, the Suntour ZeroN35 Boost Air. It also has 203 mm TRP Slate T4 brakes and a specific suspended saddle from TranzX. To handle elevation changes, the transmission switches back to a classic 12-speed chain derailleur. More technical, this E-MTB is priced at $4,499 in North America.

Serial 1 Electric Bikes in France Since 2021

For most people, Harley-Davidson is only synonymous with large motorcycles designed for cruising Route 66 or the California coast. But the American brand, which has experienced a concerning decline in sales, has begun shifting toward electric mobility.

First, there was Livewire, the electric motorcycle. This roadster then gave its name to an independent brand, followed by the second Livewire S2 Del Mar model this spring 2022. More surprisingly, Milwaukee’s company developed electric bikes under the name Serial 1.

Since last year, Serial 1 has been selling three E-bikes in Europe and France. The MOSH/CTY is the entry-level model with a single speed, no fenders, priced at €3,999. This bike is available in two more refined versions, the RUSH/CTY and RUSH/CTY Step Thru. With fenders, rear rack, brake light, and an automatic Enviolo transmission via a flexible belt, they are very good urban E-bikes.

Based on experience, these bikes feature a powerful Brose S motor delivering a very lively 90 Nm torque, and the large Schwalbe tires compensate for the lack of suspension. The unique glove box within the frame, also handy with its key, is another plus. Their other strength is the integration of large batteries, 529 Wh on the “Step Thru” frame and 706 Wh on the standard frame. However, the price is steep at €5,200, and they are quite heavy.
