On June 20, 2005, at the Geneva Motor Show, an urban trio made its debut on the European market: the Toyota Aygo, the Citroën C1, and the Peugeot 107.

Born from a partnership between Toyota and PSA, these three mini-urban cars, the Aygo, C1, and 107 shared the same technical base, produced in the Czech Republic, but each displayed a distinct design. Their mission: to offer an economical, maneuverable, and reliable car at a tight price. The Aygo stood out with its funkier style, clever interior, and proven Japanese mechanics, particularly a dynamic and economical three-cylinder petrol engine from Daihatsu.

From its first generation, the Aygo made a mark with its accessibility and robustness. Compact (3.40 m), lightweight (790 kg), and well-equipped from the base model, it particularly appealed to young drivers and budget-conscious urbanites. And while its French cousins — the C1 and the 107, then the 108 and the new C1 — gradually bowed out, the Aygo continued on its path.

Only one will remain

Twenty years later, the little Toyota is the sole survivor of this original trio. But far from being stagnant, it has transformed. In 2022, it became the Aygo X, a mini-crossover with a bold look, designed for Europe, featuring an elevated silhouette, colorful personalization, and modern equipment (touchscreen, JBL audio, complete connectivity). It retains its compact size (3.70 m) while gaining versatility and comfort.

And 2026 will mark a new stage with the arrival of a self-recharging hybrid version — a first in the A segment. Powered by 116 hp, this system allows the Aygo X hybrid to reduce its emissions to just 86 g/km, while significantly improving its performance. It now embodies a responsible, fun, and efficient city car, in tune with its time.

From its funky little sister to the trendy, hybrid crossover youngest, the Aygo has managed to evolve without denying its roots. Twenty years after its debut, it remains a unique model… and a pioneer still ahead of its time.
