CUPRA Terramar America Cup

CUPRA has designed an amphibious version of its new Terramar. A publicity stunt lacking flair and almost embarrassing.

The Terramar America’s Cup is capable, according to CUPRA, of not only moving on asphalt but also navigating, thus fully honoring its name Terramar, meaning “Land and sea”. Just as the dish often features an explosion of flavors, what we have before our eyes is quite bland. This project, born from a collaboration between CUPRA engineers and Brava Boats, has led to the development of a Terramar ready to sail in Barcelona for the 37th edition of the America’s Cup Louis Vuitton, whose constructor is a partner.

The CUPRA Terramar America’s Cup will lead the AC75s to the race site off Barcelona during the final phases of the Louis Vuitton Cup. An attraction that will delight the younger ones but that true sailing enthusiasts will certainly not appreciate. So, is it a real amphibious car? Not quite, as you might have guessed. The nautical engineering experts at Brava Boats simply designed a custom base similar to that of a trimaran to accommodate the car, capable of supporting a load of up to 2,500 kg on the waves of the Mediterranean. Rigorous buoyancy and stability tests were conducted to simulate different sailing conditions, ensuring that the CUPRA Terramar America’s Cup meets the highest safety standards and doesn’t sink in world view!

Electronic controls dedicated to maneuvers and propulsion specially designed for boats have been integrated into the car. The dashboard has been revamped to incorporate navigation modes and to control the platform. The question remains whether creating a buzz with a fake floating car truly honors the oldest sporting competition in the world.
