Peugeot has just announced the introduction of a new hybrid powertrain in the 3008 and 5008 range. Based on a 48-volt system, it is slightly less fuel-consuming than an equivalent thermal engine. This setup can operate without the internal combustion engine. According to Peugeot, it will even be possible to drive in electric mode for more than 50% of the time in urban environments. However, this projection seems very optimistic given the technology employed.
The electric motor in these new 3008 and 5008 hybrids can deliver up to 28 hp and 55 Nm. Located within the 6-speed dual-clutch transmission, it assists a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine producing 136 hp, and can deliver an additional 12 hp in hybrid mode when the driver presses the accelerator vigorously. The operation of the entire system is displayed in real-time on the instrument cluster.
3008 and 5008 that consume less in the city
The hybrid system adds a bit of responsiveness at low speeds. But it’s mainly its efficiency that makes this new engine interesting. “Compared to a non-electrified gasoline engine with similar characteristics, the HYBRID powertrain allows for an average fuel savings of about 1 liter/100 km on a segment C SUV (WLTP mixed cycle)“, Peugeot states. The most significant savings occur in the city, where consumption could drop by 2.5 liters. On the highway, however, this hybridization provides no benefit. CO2 emissions have been estimated at 126 grams/km for the 3008, and 128 grams for the 5008 (low range). The battery, with a net capacity of 432 Wh, is located under the front left seat. It recharges automatically during deceleration phases.
The introduction of this new powertrain results in the discontinuation of the PureTech 130 EAT8. The commercial launch of the 48-volt hybrid 3008 and 5008 models will take place in the second half of 2023. Prices have not yet been announced.
