The Tesla Paint Scandal Resurfaces

Driven by maximum profitability, the finish quality of Tesla is often criticized, particularly the paint.

The quality of Tesla paints has been subject to criticism and discussions in dedicated groups on social media over the years, especially among owners. Feedback is often requested when ordering a new Tesla regarding the color to choose and its durability over time. This inquiry is legitimate, as the option for a color is expensive, with Tesla charging more than elsewhere.

For a major manufacturer, an optional color usually starts at around 350 euros.

At Tesla, for a Model Y, the cheapest paint option – aside from the standard white – will cost you 1300 euros (blue and black), with the price doubling for cherry red and Quicksilver gray. Sadly, many criticisms have been raised regarding paint finish issues, particularly in certain areas where the paint is too thin or shows color differences depending on the material underneath (plastic or metal).

Imperfections and dust particles are also too often visible beneath the paint surface.

Another complaint that annoys owners is the premature wear of their car’s body, especially for the so-called “first generation” models. The Model 3, updated at the end of 2023, marked a clear improvement, as did the quality of its interior materials. The Model Y is desperately waiting for its update, expected at the end of 2024 or early 2025.

A design flaw perhaps?

It has been reported that quality issues with paint are partly due to the speed of Tesla’s production processes. Indeed, to meet high demand, certain aspects of quality, including the paint, may have been compromised.

Another phenomenon noted is vulnerability to damage caused by minor impacts, such as chips from stones, or even by natural elements like acid rain. This vulnerability seems to be more pronounced in models with darker colors. Some owners living in cold regions have reported that Tesla paint appears particularly susceptible to cracking and chipping in freezing conditions.

Tesla has become aware of some of these criticisms and is trying to improve paint quality over the years, fearing to lose customers who might be tempted to return to competitors. For example, Tesla has started offering – at exorbitant prices – optional paint protections, such as protective films.

What solution to choose?

Mobiwisy was previously surprised by the “white Tesla syndrome“. Due to the outrageous painting prices, 9 out of 10 clients get used to the idea of only buying the base version with the standard white finish. So much so that on the street, Teslas can be spotted like yellow taxis in New York…

But Tesla owners have a solution: the wrapping option. For a cost often lower than that of an optional paint, a color and protective film will provide much better performance over time.
