The first Tesla Cybertrucks registered in Europe
Surprise with the broadcast, on social media, of the first Tesla Cybertrucks duly registered in Europe. How is this possible?
According to the latest news, the Tesla Cybertruck did not meet European pedestrian protection requirements to be approved… and thus registered. The protruding parts of its aluminum bodywork are under scrutiny from authorities, as a frontal collision for a child in particular, even at very low speed, could be fatal.
What a surprise, then, to see two examples of the Tesla Cybertruck duly registered in Poland and the Czech Republic springing up on social media. Two countries that are part of the European Union and therefore comply with the European Certificate of Conformity (COC) issued for approved vehicles.
How to register a Cybertruck in France?
In reality, the workaround is quite simple: these owners applied for individual registration (ATI), a procedure established specifically for imported vehicles. However, in this case, modifications may be required to bring the vehicle into compliance. This often affects the polluting emissions of combustion vehicles, which is not the case here with the Tesla Cybertruck, a 100% electric SUV. The lighting signals (indicators, headlights) often need adjustment as well.
In France, it is theoretically possible to import – if Tesla allows it! – a Cybertruck and file for individual registration. The technical file must be complete, VAT must be paid, the customs clearance certificate (846A) provided, as well as proof of residence and identification documents. This will be followed by an inspection by the authorities that will check the vehicle and ensure that it meets French and European safety and environmental standards.
Then, once the precious sesame is issued, the Tesla Cybertruck must be registered like any other vehicle, and the legal taxes must be paid. Notably, the weight penalty that could exceed 20,000 euros in France due to the XXL mass of the Cybertruck: 3000 kg empty in the RWD version and 3200 kg in the AWD version.
Despite everything, the authorities might determine that once the Cybertruck is loaded, its GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) exceeds 3500 kg and therefore requires a C1 category license (light truck) allowing vehicles with a GVWR between 3500 and 7500 kg. And suddenly, the idea of driving a Cybertruck will fizzle out…
