Elon Musk himself announced the presentation date of Tesla’s autonomous taxi, the Robotaxi. The stock has started to rise again.

Creating diversion, breaking the dynamic, restoring the image of a brand losing ground in innovation and catching up quickly. It’s somewhat for all these reasons that, in a tweet of 28 characters, Elon Musk revealed the presentation date of what aims to be a historic moment in Tesla’s history. The date of an autonomous taxi, simply named Robotaxi, on August 8, 2024.

Was this the information that consumers and investors were waiting for from Tesla? Certainly less than a deep update on the Model Y or the unveiling of the famous car priced at 25,000 euros / dollars. However, the stock marked a pleasant stir with a 6% increase after months and months of decline. Tesla needs to make headlines, regain the initiative after the fizzling of the Cybertruck at the end of 2023.

What do we know about the Robotaxi?

The image of a wooden model, in a studio said to be at Tesla, leaked nearly a year ago. It shows a vehicle with only two seats, very streamlined and with gull-wing doors. But is this solution an attempt at diversion? Or another judgment error? Because wanting to revolutionize the world of individual transport with autonomous vehicles should imply optimal commercial pragmatism with a capacity of 4 to 5 people. That’s also the interest of not having a human driver present.

Since the release of this model, Musk hinted that the design would be inspired by the very cubic lines of the Cybertruck pickup. Again, is this information genuine or just bait? The revealed model had a very low cabin, which is hardly in line with the comfort sought by the elderly for getting in and out.

For the rest, we have seen for several weeks the energy Tesla is investing in developing its autonomous driving system. A system already deployed to customers since early March 2024.

Finally, the question remains whether the market is mature enough for customers to trust autonomous driving. In San Francisco, for instance, the bugs from autonomous taxis already in service for 2 years are constant, as are the accidents. So much so that bankruptcy looms for some.
